FCG International Literature Award 2008: CEES NOOTEBOOM

“An outstanding Dutch writer born in The Hague in 1933, he is the author of numerous works that range from poetry and fiction to essays and even travel chronicles.  He is a convinced Europeanist, translator and an active defender of the trans-national sense of culture and is linked to Spain through his promotion of our culture. Among his most important pieces we can highlight “All Souls’ Day”, “The Enigma of the Light”, “In the Mountains of Holland”, “Rituals” and “The Santiago Detour”.

According to the Jury for the FCG International Award for Literature that met in Valladolid, Spain (June 27^th, 2008), Chaired by: Mrs. Mercedes Monmany, literary critic and writer, and made up by the following members: Mrs. Rosa Pereda de Castro, writer and journalits; Mr. Carlos Roldán San Juan, Editor of El Norte de Castilla Newspaper; Mr. Ángel Sánchez Harguindey, Deputy-Editor of El País Newspaper; Mr. José Miguel Santiago Castelo, Deputy-Editor of ABC Newspaper; Mr. Josep-Manuel Silva Alcalde, member of the Board of Directors of RTVE [Spanish National Radio and Television].

 

 

 

CEES NOOTEBOOM - Biography

Born in The Hague (1933), Cees Nooteboom is one of the greatest and most original Dutch writers. He lives in constant movement between Holland, Spain and Germany. He is a translator of Spanish, Catalonian, French and German poetry and also of American theater. He is the author of novels, poems, essays and travel books and is a writer who is concerned about Europeanism, nationalism: he does not consider himself Dutch, but rather feels a longing for Spain and dreams of non-existent mountains in the Netherlands.

In his books, he expresses his European and cosmopolitan longing in different scenarios: Das Paradies ist nebenan (Philip en de anderen), his first novel, originally published in 1954, was inspired by a trip he had undertaken hitch-hiking all over Europe.  With Rituals (1980) he won the Bordewijz Award as well as the Pegasus Literature Award. In Mokusei, he describes the story of Arnold Pessers, a Dutch photographer who is travelling in Japan to create a tourism report but who  had actually set off in search of a “place for his soul” and he persists in searching for it in a precise part of the globe. There was a time in which Holland was not the small and ordered country that we know now, but extended towards the south with a mountainous and wild territory, forgotten in progress and where no northern would dare go.  It is this panorama that is presented in In the Mountains of Holland, translated into the most-read languages. Allerzielen, All Souls’ Day (1998), is his most ambitious work up to now as well as his most recent: In this book, the creator of television documentaries Arthur Daane lives in Berlin and meets a Dutch student doing research on Queen Urraca, a controversial character of medieval Spanish history and he follows her to Madrid. The Santiago Detour is an example of his love for Spain.
