Manuel Sales Maza (Onda, Castellón, 1963), has been linked all his life to ceramics, the economic source of his hometown and the area. He trained at the Municipal School of Ceramics in Onda, where he comes into contact with ceramists and people related to the artistic world. His work is related to research into the use of different types of stoneware, enriched with soluble metallic salts and his own enamels, all fired at 1,200ºC.
His artistic work is extensive, with a fortnight of individual exhibitions and thirty collective ones in different points of the Spanish geography and of the international scope, as in Buenos Aires, Limoges, among other cities. He has obtained recognitions in artistic ceramics, the first prizes were the Nacional (Castellón, 1999), Internacional de L'Alcora (Castellón, 2008), Nacional de cerámica plana (Castellón, 2013), among others.
In the exhibition Retículas. Structures of form and colour, the latest works by the ceramic artist Manuel Sales (Onda, Castellón, 1963) are presented. They are the result of research into geometric abstraction in recent years and have given rise to compositions based on the reduction of plastic language to its basic elements, a work that connects with the tradition of geometric art and, especially, with the movements of the avant-garde of the 20th century, where the reticle, as the leitmotif of his work, as a visual structure, is a spatial entity, and has much of that passionate search for the plastic equivalent of a universal truth.
From the geometric reticules, he constructs and emerges the diverse forms and colors, following a creative process with intuition and knowledge, where he conjugates the wisdom of years to fit the pieces formed in general by rectangles and squares, that determine the aspect of the aesthetics of these series, uniting the planes and giving place to a harmonious set, of color, symmetry and with a deep meaning. The measure and proportion used connects with the golden reason, it is the result of the observation of nature (flowers, leaves,...), of the human body and of the essential form of architecture, everything obeys to the formula that hides the secret of the apparent harmony. Sales, uses those proportions to confer compositions that when contemplated reach a sensation of tranquility, rhythm, order and integral balance, each reticule constitutes a part, divided in "cells" or in several squares or rectangles of different sizes, and the work as a whole, forms a whole.
